Math Department Policies and Procedures
Testing Information:
At least two unit tests will be given each six weeks. These tests are carefully designed to include various levels of cognitive assessment. Each test will be returned to the student at which time the teacher will thoroughly discuss the test with the class. To preserve the integrity of the test, students will not be allowed to take the test from the classroom. If a parent wishes to review a test, he/she may contact the teacher for an appointment.
Retesting:
If a student scores below a 70 on a unit test in an on-level math class, he/she may be eligible to take a six weeks test. The grade on the six weeks test will replace one failing test grade with a grade up to a 70. A student is eligible to take the retest only if he/she has completed the reviews for all unit tests and turned them in on their respective due dates. There is no retesting in honors classes.
Tutoring:
The CHS Math Department teachers have their own tutoring schedules posted on each teacher's home page. If a private tutor is desired, you may obtain a list of tutors from the counseling office
.
Honors Information
Honors/pre-AP math classes cover roughly the same material as a regular class of the same course, but go into much more depth. Honors students are expected to have mastered all material from previous courses and must be able to explore new topics independently. Essential skills for success include organization, time management, and disciplined study.
Testing:
In honors pre-AP math classes, tests are weighted more heavily than in regular classes (70%). Tests are not merely repetitions of homework problems, but rather require students to apply their knowledge on more advanced, higher level thinking problems. Retesting is not offered at the honors/pre-AP level.
Guidelines for Placement:
To register for an honors or pre-AP math course, a student must either: 1) have successfully completed the prior honors or pre-AP math course with a grade above 70 OR 2) must have a grade of 92 or higher in the prior course at the regular level.
Guidelines for Exiting an Honors/Pre-AP Class:
A student wishing to drop to a regular level class may do so with parent approval as follows: within the first two weeks of school at the end of the first six weeks at the end of the first semester.
