CHS VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION!

Don't forget - CHS is hosting a special Veterans Day celebration THIS MONDAY, November 12th at 10 am by the flag pole in front of CHS, and we'd love to have any veterans (or active military personnel) attend.   After the ceremony, all veterans are invited inside to a special brunch in their honor.  If you, or a relative, are a veteran and would like to attend, we'd love to honor you and all you've done for our country.  Please send a quick RSVP to Lynne Anderson at Anderlyn@cisdmail.com  so we are sure to welcome you personally.

VISITING VIP

Cast and crew of Carroll Theatre Department's The Phantom of the Opera were given great encouragement from a very qualified source recently when Bert Fink, Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing with R&H Theatricals, a division of the Rodgers and Hammerstein organization in New York, dropped in on one of their rehearsals and stayed behind to chat with students afterwards.

Mr. Fink was involved with the original London West-End production from 1986, then Broadway's longest-running production and national tours of the show.  He shared some great Phantom stories, for example when the original production was staged at The Majestic Theatre in London, the back walls of the theatre had to be expanded almost into the theatre behind to accommodate the scale of the production. The assembled student cast was also able to get some first hand advice from Mr. Fink, who advised that if they feel and believe in their characters, the audience will believe it too.

Carroll Theatre obviously made a great impression on this VIP visitor.  He mentioned that the cast was very impressive and the community fortunate to have the Carroll Theatre directors and the department's resources to take on the amateur staging of The Phantom of the Opera.  As a direct result of Mr. Fink's visit, R&H Theatricals Vice President, Charlie Scatamacchia now plans to attend one of the performances in December.

Directors Stacie and Roald Martinsen will open The Phantom of the Opera at Carroll Senior High School auditorium on November 30th at 7.30pm, with five more shows to follow on December 1st, 2nd (2.30pm matinee), 7th, 8th and 9th (2.30pm matinee).  For information on the production and to buy tickets please go to CSHS Theater Dept website.

Please note that if you have a child at both schools, your directory will be at the High School. Questions, email Daphne Shipowitz at jshipowitz1@verizon.net.  If you would still like to join PTSO and receive a directory, have your child return the membership form with a $20 check.

COMMUNITY SERVICE UPDATE
Volunteer
** IF you are unfamiliar with the Community Service Program at CHS/CSHS, click here for quick overview of the program.

SENIORS:

Take time to check your hours on the Community Service bulletin board.  If the totals are incorrect, please email melodybazar@verizon.net.   We want your hours to be correct just as much as you do!  Your hours are posted monthly (mid to late) on the CSHS bulletin board.  April 1st is the CISD Success Scholar Community Service deadline for all students.   Please check with your Guidance counselor if you are unsure whether you qualify for Success Scholar at graduation.  100 hours of community service is only a part of the Success Scholar program.

Your approved yellow community service log cards will be available to you at the end of the year.  Please contact Melody Bazar at melodybazar@verizon.net if you would like to receive them.  The Community Service Board will archive files for one year after graduation.

JUNIORS: Community service hours are an important part of all your upcoming college applications.  Most colleges want to see that you have worked helping your community.  Keep up your community service.  College applications will ask for them.

FRESHMEN and SOPHOMORES: Remember that all hours submitted for community service must be through a non-profit organization.  If you are not certain whether the agency is non-profit or not, complete the blue Pre-Approval form which can be found in the Community Service notebook in the Guidance Office or click below for a partial list of approved/disapproved organizations.

ALL STUDENTS:  Certificates are awarded to all students with 40+ approved hours earned from June 2007 through April 1, 2008 deadline date. Certificates will be distributed in May.  Students that qualify are also eligible to purchase a letterman jacket round community service patch with bar patches underneath denoting the year received.  Order forms will be attached to the end-of-year certificates.

Double hours are never allowed.  If your sponsor is promising Double Hours, we cannot accept them, as our guidelines prohibit any double hours. Please make sure that "one line" total hours are detailed on a separate piece of paper.

Not sure if your philanthropy/organization qualifies?  Click here for a partial list of approved/disappoved organizations.

TRANSFER STUDENTS:
A transfer student may participate in the Success Scholars Community Service Program.  The 100 hours required community service hours (along with academic requirements) will be pro-rated based on the year the student becomes a student in the district as follows:  sophomore year - 75 hours required; junior year - 50 hours required; senior year - 25 hours required.  If you have any questions, please contact your counselor for confirmation of guidelines.

Questions about the Community Service Program?  Email Melody Bazar at melodybazar@verizon.net or check out the

Community Service Handbook on the CISD website.

CEREAL COMPETITION!
Battle of the Boxes

The competition is about to begin - it's Southlake vs. Grapevine again!  Carroll High School & Carroll Senior High School will join together to compete against Grapevine High School to see who can donate the most cereal boxes as part of the "Christmas is for Children" food drive.  The cereal boxes will be included in family food baskets so that children have something they enjoy, since cereal is often too expensive for families to purchase regularly.

What:              Remind your student to bring at least one box of name brand, kids' cereal to school and drop it off in the lobby or at the cafeteria door.  (It's best to send in recognizable cereals that kids like, even if not the most nutritious choice.)

When:         Monday, November 26th - Thursday, December 13

(Start bringing in your cereal boxes the Monday after Thanksgiving break, but you can start collecting your cereal boxes at home now!)

Who:          Sponsored by CSHS and CHS Student Council and "Christmas is for Children"

How:           Donations will be counted each week to see who is winning the competition!

Remind your students to contribute to food baskets

this holiday season and bring cereal to school!!

School Walk for Diabetes
School Walk

The Rockenbaugh PE department is hosting a School Walk for Diabetes and we'd love to have you all participate!  The walk is scheduled for Tuesday, November 27th at RES at 4:00.

Registration  is that day only beginning at 3:00 PM in front of the school.  Registration is $5.00 per person, which includes a free water bottle for the first 250 people. All money raised will go directly to the American Diabetes Association.

The walk will be approximately 3 miles down Byron Nelson, through the park to Continental and back to RES.  All participants need to wear athletic shoes and bring plenty of drinking water (water is not provided).   If you prefer to pass on walking that day but want to help, we need some parent volunteers to help with registration at 3 pm.  Please contact Trisha Pate (PateT@cisdmail.com ) to sign-up to volunteer, or if you have any questions about the event.
