SAMMY
SCHOLARSHIP
The
SAMMY 2008 Scholarship Award
recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout
the contiguous US. Wouldn't it be great to see a
Carroll Dragon showoff their milk mustache for us?! So teachers,
coaches, principals, counselors, parents, and relatives -- nominate a student
athlete for the SAMMY (Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year) 2008
Award! Additionally, all high school seniors are allowed and encouraged to
nominate themselves.
Each winner (25
total winners) will receive a $7,500 scholarship, a weekend at Disney World, and
an opportunity to be pictured in a special congratulatory Milk Mustache ad in a
June 2008 edition of USA TODAY and other national magazines!
Judging
of the nominees will be based on five criteria:
academic performance (35%), athletic excellence (35%), leadership (15%),
community service (10%), and "milk experience" (5%). The deadline is March 7,
2008, and you can find all the details and the official rules about this
scholarship online. Applications will only be accepted

Our Kids &
the Internet
Parents of children four
years and older will not want to miss a public forum on Tuesday, January
29 at CSHS. The forum is being sponsored by SPARKS (Students and
Parents Against Risks to our Kids in Southlake) in conjunction with Carroll ISD
and Southlake SPIN. Admission to the 7 p.m. event is free of charge. Designed for parents only, the forum will
equip parents with knowledge to help them guide their kids awayfrom
internet pornography and online predators. Topics will include:
- How pornographers market to kids;
- How predators seduce children online;
- How to inspect your PC for porn and
software that kids use to get it;
- Portable porn and game systems;
- How to set boundaries for children,
and keep them on your side;
- Legal and financial threats to the
family due to online behavior;
- Tools to protect the family and
monitor online activities; and
- What to do if you find involvement
with pornography or predators.
The forum will be led by
Buddy Knight, a retired Navy Lieutenant turned motivational speaker. Knight, a
commander who served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, now runs
Knights' Quest Ministries, an organization dedicated to educating parents on
dealing with internet dangers. "We need to know what our kids are seeing on the
internet," said City of Southlake Council member and SPARKS Chair Laura K. Hill.
"And if someone is preying on our children, we need to know how to fight
back." Click here for
more detailed information.

GREAT
STRIDES
The
Carroll Senior High Spanish club
would like to invite our Carroll Dragon Family to join us on our 3rd
annual "Great Strides" walk to
cure Cystic Fibrosis. Last year the
Carroll Dragon team raised a little over $8,000. This year, we would like to beat that
total. Together we can make this
happen! The 2008 Keller/ Southlake
/Grapevine walk will take place at Bear Creak Park,in Keller on March 28th at 5 pm.
Everyone is welcome!
CF has been termed as the
number one genetic killer of children and young adults in the U.S. It is a life-threatening disease that causes
mucus to build up and clog some of the organs in the body, particularly in the
lungs and pancreas. Approximately 30,000 people in the US have Cystic Fibrosis;
an additional 10 million more, or about one in every 31 Americans, are carriers
of the defective CF gene but do not have the disease.
So
help us make 'CF' stand for 'Cure Found'!
