Teamwork Works!~
our theme for the 2007-2008 academic year

Orientation Events for rising 5th graders going to DIS:

DIS Parent Orientation: 6:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 13, 2008 in the DEIS Cafeteria

DIS Student Orientation: 9:15 A.M., Thursday, May 15, 2008

Important Cafeteria Information:
It is against school board policy to allow students to charge lunches.
If a student does not have lunch money or funds in their lunch account,
their lunch tray will be pulled and they will be given an alternative lunch (cheese sandwich and small carton of milk).

You may log into the CISD Child Nutrition Services website and click on the Lunch Money Now link. There is no charge for a  parent to look at a student's  balance, set up low-balance email account , or view recent purchases. There is only a charge if you  use a credit card to apply money to the account.

Congratulations to the 108 Study Island Survivors!
Awesome job to 68 third graders and 40 fourth graders who completed the challenge.  Mrs. Rozell and Mrs. Cooper's class had 100% finish! WOW!!!

Congratulations to Polly Allen!!!

Polly Allen is the Teacher of the Year for DES. We are fortunate to have incredible teachers on staff that are admired by all. You are an inspiration to us all!

Science Teacher Debra Heath was recently selected as a Statewide Semi-Finalist during preliminary judging of the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award honoring the best teachers in Texas for 2008.
In addition to other DES teachers, Debra's leadership has distinguished Durham Elementary as one of five schools nationally to participate in an exciting product development pilot study with LEGO Education Corporation.

Coach Wasson, Kyle Padron and Brayden Burnett were guest speakers to DES second grade boys and girls. They spoke of what it means to be a Carroll  Dragon:

Listen to your teacher,
always encourage your teammates or classmates,
strive to do your best,
what you think and you do is up to you.
Have a great attitude.

Durham Chosen For LEGO Education Robotics Testing
LEGO Education is pleased to announce that Durham Elementary School has been selected as a test site for a new robotics program. The science-based robotics set will be added to the company’s product line in January 2009.

Currently, second to fourth grade students are testing the product and submitting their feedback to LEGO Education. Additional details about the product will follow once testing is complete

Durham's PTO initial forecast of the profits from Kings, Queens and Dragons is $40,000.00. It was an incredible evening and enjoyed by all who attended.

Additional PTO info: "We have finalized our partnership with Terra/Hat Creek, the developers of the Shady Oaks neighborhood across the street from Durham. They will  be completely renovating our front campus landscaping during the summer and we will return to school in August with the pride we feel for the inside of our building, showing on the outside. They will also be providing us with a generous donation for our PTO to use for a project on the playground and the field areas of our campus. We are very appreciative of their generosity and continued commitment to a partnership with the DES and DIS PTOs. "

QUEST Nominations
Nomination are being accepted for grades 1-11 from
March 25th-April 9th. Forms are available at the front office on all campuses. Deadline to submit nominations is April 9th.

PTO Volunteers of the Month(s)
February Volunteer of the Month is Stacy Porter for her assisting Mrs. Heath with the Cardboard Boat Regatta. She played a big part of ensuring the Boat Regatta's ongoing success.

There are two March Volunteers of the Month. Kari Mawn and Diane Dorman, both new to Durham, jumped in and helped coordinate, decorate and orchestrate wonderful auction items and give-aways. The black and white photos were incredible of our kids!
