THE GREEN PAGES WEB DIRECTORY - PROUD SUPPORTERS OF THE CARROLL DRAGONS

The Carroll Medical Academy is an academic program that focuses on providing exceptional students who have an interest in the medical field with a math and science intensive curriculum beginning the freshman year of high school. The curriculum allows students to maximize the number of Advanced Placement (AP) science and math courses during their high school years. A P courses provide students with an opportunity to earn college credit through the AP exam process. The advanced coursework found in the CMA program also benefits students because it helps prepare them for the rigorous demands of college. Today, more and more top-ranked universities are looking at the rigor of a student's high school course work as a key predictor of college success rather than relying exclusively on other indicators such as class rank or GPA.

Students who enter the CMA program benefit in another way from the science course curriculum offered to them . CMA courses emphasize the application of various concepts to the medical field. Students perform lab activities and gather information relevant to possible future careers in medicine. Opportunities are made available for CPR and first aide training of participants. Medical professionals are brought in throughout the year as guest lecturers. Students have chances to make visits to medical facilities, to experience distance learning and ultimately will have the opportunity for a senior year internship under the supervision of a local medical professional . CISD, in conjunction with the Hudson Foundation which is providing a grant for this program, believes the opportunities available to students through the Carroll Medical Academy will continue to enrich and encourage participants as they work toward their goal of a career in medicine.

Interested students should apply for the CMA program during the spring semester of their 8th grade year . Application forms, transcripts, teacher recommendations and student essays are required for consideration. Applications will be sent out in early spring and accepted candidates will be notified before the end of the 2005/2006 school year. Students currently attending Carroll ISD as well as interested students attending other middle schools within North Texas are encouraged to apply. CISE students can obtain applications in the spring from the counselor on their middle school campus. Any candidate outside CISD may requests for an application or send all inquiries regarding the program to Sherry Martin at MartinSh@cisdmail.com.
