The Carroll Dragons will have almost an entirely new set of opponents. Carroll is headed for District 7-5A for the next two years and will join two new Class 5A schools and one familiar one. Besides the Dragons, the new 7-5A will include long-time rival Coppell, Keller, Keller Central, Fossil Ridge, Saginaw and Denton Guyer, Northwest, Saginaw and Denton Guyer will be moving up to 5A for the first time next year. “I think it’s going to be good for us,” Carroll ISD athletic director Kevin Ozee said. “It’s a competitive district and a good geographical district for us travel-wise.” Carroll is also shifting to an eight-school district after competing the last two years in a six-school district. The newly aligned districts for football and basketball will be in place for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years. Carroll and Coppell are currently district mates in 6-5A and get the opportunity to continue their rivalry in district. The reclassifications are based on school enrollments submitted to the UIL. The new District 7-5A: Carroll Cheerleader Tryouts Coming In MarchThe time is nearing for varsity, junior varsity or freshman cheerleader tryouts. Sign up and get an information packet in the front office at Carroll Senior High School, Carroll High School, Carroll Middle School and Dawson Middle School. A mandatory parent meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. in the Carroll High School cafeteria. The following are the tryout dates: March 5: Mandatory Varsity and JV minimum tumbling requirement tryout Carroll ISD Announces Bad Weather DaysDue to Carroll ISD schools closing for two days because of bad weather, both days will be made up in April by students and staff. Classes will now be held Friday, April 9 and Monday, April 12. Carroll school officials had already made the decision to have school on April 12 because of the bad weather closure on Jan. 7 due to icy conditions. Because of the Friday, Feb. 12 closing due to heavy snowfall, Carroll will use the other designated day on April 9. The early dismissal on Thursday, Feb. 11 due to inclement weather was not considered a school closing since students started classes at the regularly scheduled time and attended school for four hours. 11 Carroll Campuses Earn High Performing HonorsAll 11 Carroll ISD schools received recognition from the National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) as part of the 2009 Just for the Kids Campaign for Higher Performing Schools in Texas. The campuses and their honors are as follows:
Representatives from each of the district's campuses will be invited to participate in award presentations and in conversations with other schools about core practices they believe are important to ensure high performing students. CSHS Receives College Readiness RecognitionCarroll Senior High School has received the "2009 College Readiness Award" from the Texas ACT Council. The honor recognizes schools for maintaining or increasing the number of students taking the ACT Assessment over the past five years and significantly increasing their level of achievement and college readiness. The Texas ACT Council is comprised of secondary and post-secondary educators who advise ACT, Inc. on the utilization of ACT programs and services in Texas schools and colleges. In 2009, nearly 160,000 Texas students took the ACT which was an all-time high and Texas ACT scores have increased substantially over the last five years. Relay for Life is Coming to SouthlakeIn the spirit of Rachel's Challenge, we are proud to announce that this community-wide event will be held May 21, 2010 (times and location to be forthcoming.) Relay For Life is the signature fund-raising activity for the American Cancer Society. At the event, our community will have the opportunity to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and empower individuals to fight back against this disease. Eleven Carroll Students Named National Merit SemifinalistsCarroll Independent School District is proud to announce that 11 Carroll Senior High School students have been named Semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Competition. The students were among 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide who will compete for some 8,200 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 milion. Among those honored are: Alec Brown, Devon Bussell, Alexandra Danner, Ryan Gentry, Dillon Huff, Emily Lang, Sara Lanier, Michael Panek, Amanda Presmyk, William Weaver and Yuefeng Wu. School officials said more than 1.5 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/national Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as the initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. Approximately 15,000 Semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level and it is from this group that all National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. CSHS Principal Announces 40 Commended StudentsCarroll Senior High School Principal Michael Rhodes announced today that 40 CSHS students have earned Commended recognition in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. The district announced last week that 11 students were named Semifinalists in the competition. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Carroll Students Earn Black American, Hispanic Merit HonorsOfficials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of more than 1,600 Black American high school seniors who have been designated Semifinalists in the 46th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. Carroll Senior High School senior Lauren Casonhua was among those honored. These scholastically talented students now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship Awards, worth some $2.6 million, to be offered next spring. Approximately 1,300 Semifinalists are expected to fulfill additional requirements and advance to the Finalist level in the 2010 program. All Achievement Scholar awardees will be selected from the Finalist group on the basis of their abilities, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Also honored from CSHS were seven students selected as 2009-2010 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars. The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. This year’s group consists of nearly 5,000 students selected from a pool of over 200,000 students who took the 2008 PSAT and identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino. Students have achieved a minimum PSAT score their region and have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are designated as Scholars. Hispanic Program Scholars from CSHS include Tyler Bravo, Chase Brooke, Laura Christensen, Hilary Dalton, Andrea Herrera, Celina Mojica, and Andrew Shiminsk. Carroll ACT Scores Up in 2009Last week we told you that Carroll students increased scores on the SAT college entrance exam by 12 points. This week, local officials are celebrating an increase in the 2009 ACT scores, as well. Dragons posted a composite 24.9 on the ACT, up from 24.5 last year. A total of 394 students took the test, scoring a 24.6 on the English portion, a 25.2 on the Mathematics, 25.2 in Reading and 24.0 in Science. Carroll students increased their scores in each and every category since 2008. The local 24.9 composite scores are well above state and national averages. 2009-10 Compendium of Texas Colleges and Financial Aid Calendar Now AvailableThe Texas Comptroller's Office and the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation have released this year's online version of the Compendium of Texas Colleges and Financial Aid Calendar. Students, parents, school counselors, teachers and others can now review important information about Texas colleges and universities on the Comptroller's Every Chance, Every Texan website. The Compendium contains a list of colleges and universities in the State of Texas, admission requirements, total expenses for an academic year, financial aid data and related information, helpful hints to the college bound, together with a calendar of various scholarship deadlines arranged by months. Immunization InformationAre your children compliant with the new, state required immunizations? If you have a child entering kindergarten or 7th grade, you will need additional immunizations before August 1, 2009. Also, it may be time for your 8th-12th grader to receive their Tdap/Td booster. Please be advised that students will not receive their class placements or schedules without documentation of compliance. Visit your family doctor or the Tarrant County Health Department (817-285-4155) for all your vaccinations. Don't delay, if you already have proof of inoculation, bring it to your school nurse ASAP.
