Carroll Medical Academy Application
The Carroll Medical Academy is an advanced high school academic tract for students interested in pursuing careers within the medical field. The program, originally made possible through a grant provided by The Hudson Foundation, is designed for students from grades 9-12 who qualify under very specific program guidelines. Carroll Medical Academy offers a math and science intensive curriculum beginning the freshman year of high school. The curriculum allows students to maximize the number of Advanced Placement (AP) science and math courses during their high school years. A P courses provide students with an opportunity to earn college credit through the AP exam process. The advanced coursework found in the CMA program also benefits students because it helps prepare them for the rigorous demands of college. Today more and more top-ranked universities are looking at the rigor of the student's high school course work as another key predictor of college success rather than relying solely on class rank or GPA.
Students who enter the CMA program benefit in many ways from the curriculum offered. CMA courses emphasize the application of concepts to the medical field. Students learn about the variety of careers options in medicine. Opportunities are made available for specialized training of participants, such as opportunities for CPR or first aide certification. Medical professionals are invited as guest lecturers and students talk with many of these individuals one on one during our annual career day. Students are provided with opportunities to visits to medical facilities, apply for unique summer internship opportunities, and many participate in distance learning. Senior CMA students enroll in a spring internship course where they follow along side mentors in a variety of medical practices within our area. CISD believes the opportunities made available to our students through the Carroll Medical Academy will continue to enrich and encourage participants as they work toward their goal of a career in medicine.
Students interested in CMA should apply for the program during the spring semester of their 8th grade year. Applicants must currently be enrolled in advanced placement math, either Algebra I or Geometry, during the regular school year. Enrollment in pre-AP Science is highly recommended but not required. Application forms can be downloaded from this web site or obtained at one of the CISD middle school campuses during the spring semester. Submitted applications include the completed student information sheet, copy of the 8th grade transcript, two teacher letters of recommendation, 7th grade TAKS scores, parent evaluation, and student essay on an assigned topic. Applications are submitted to Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Blvd, by a deadline stated on the application. Candidates who apply by the spring deadline will be notified in late April of their status. The incoming freshmen class of CMA students will be introduced to our students and parents at the CMA Spring Banquet.
Currently, the deadline for submitting a regular admissions application to the 2009/2010 freshmen class has passed. Interested students may continue to submit applications, however at this time admissions are on a space-available basis only.
