The Advanced Placement Program allows high school students to participate in college level courses while earning high school credits, as well as, the potential to earn college level credit. Research has shown that students who succeed in AP courses generally perform well in college as a result of rigorous academic preparation.

Currently students receive 10 additional points to their final passing AP course average. However, the State of Texas is in the process of changing grade point average (GPA) requirements; therefore, the amount of additional points will change for the 2009-2010 school year.

Benefits of Taking AP Courses:

  • Students are better prepared for college.
  • Students are more challenged and stimulated by the enhanced rigor of the coursework.
  • Students master in depth content at the college level more easily after completing AP courses in high school.
  • Students scoring well on an AP exam may be eligible for the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP)
  • Students may earn college credit, saving both time and money.
  • Students are more likely to graduate with a double major and purse advanced studies.

Accelerated Math

Carroll ISD students strive for excellence in all subject areas and typically score above state and national norms on standardized assessments. During the 2001-2002 academic year, in order to meet the unique needs of our students and provide a more rigorous mathematics experience, the district implemented a compacted mathematics program in grades 5 and 6.

The fifth grade intermediate math (compacted) curriculum incorporates all of the fifth grade Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives and approximately one-third of the sixth grade TEKS objectives. The sixth grade intermediate (compacted) curriculum incorporates the remaining two-thirds of the sixth grade TEKS objectives and approximately one-half of the seventh grade TEKS objectives.

In 2002-2003, the program was expanded to include an accelerated component designed to address the needs of a population identified as exceptionally skilled in mathematics. The accelerated program curriculum compacts four years of mathematics content in two. It was designed to prepare the advanced mathematics students for Algebra I in grade seven, while at the same time, ensure that the students who pursue this track understand all concepts covered in grades 5-8.

Carroll Medical Academy

The Carroll Medical Academy is an advanced high school academic tract for students interested in pursuing careers within the medical field. The program, originally made possible through a grant provided by The Hudson Foundation, is designed for students from grades 9-12 who qualify under very specific program guidelines. Carroll Medical Academy offers a math and science intensive curriculum beginning the freshman year of high school. The curriculum allows students to maximize the number of Advanced Placement (AP) science and math courses during their high school years. A P courses provide students with an opportunity to earn college credit through the AP exam process. The advanced coursework found in the CMA program also benefits students because it helps prepare them for the rigorous demands of college. Today more and more top-ranked universities are looking at the rigor of the student's high school course work as another key predictor of college success rather than relying exclusively on class rank or GPA.

Students who enter the CMA program benefit in many ways from the curriculum offered. CMA courses emphasize the application of concepts to the medical field. Students learn about the variety of careers options in medicine. Opportunities are made available for specialized training of participants, such as opportunities for CPR or first aide certification. Medical professionals are invited as guest lecturers and students talk with many of these individuals one on one during our annual career day. Students are provided with opportunities to visits to medical facilities, apply for unique summer internship opportunities, and many participate in distance learning . Senior CMA students enroll in a spring internship course where they follow along side mentors at a variety of medical practices in our area. CISD believes the opportunities made available to our students through the Carroll Medical Academy will continue to enrich and encourage participants as they work toward their goal of a career in medicine.

Students interested in CMA should apply for the program during the spring semester of their 8th grade year. Application forms can be downloaded from this web site or obtained at one of the CISD middle school campuses once the spring semester begins at CISD. Submitted applications are to include the completed student information sheet, copy of the fall 8th grade transcript, two teacher letters of recommendations, 7th grade TAKS scores, a parent evaluation, and a student essay on an assigned topic. Applications are due at Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Blvd, by a deadline stated on the application itself. Accepted candidates will be notified by early May and will be introduced to current CMA students and parents during the CMA Spring Banquet.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 freshman class. The deadline for submitting the completed application for 2010 is 4 p.m. Friday, March 27. Students currently attending Carroll ISD as well as interested students from other school district's within North Texas are encouraged to apply. Spaces are limited.

Any candidate may request an application or send inquiries regarding the program to Sherry Martin at MartinSh@cisdmail.com.
