XTO Presents 2008 Culinary Celebration - It's Here!
Don't miss the event this weekend! Tickets are
still available!
Each year, the Carroll Education Foundation hosts an annual
Culinary Celebration to benefit the students and staff
of Carroll ISD. The Culinary Celebration is one of the
premier events in Southlake, hosting fine food, music
and a variety of bidding opportunities through the silent
and live auctions. All proceeds go toward innovative teaching
grants and scholarships for seniors throughout the district.
Mark your calendars for the 2008 Culinary Celebration,
presented by XTO, this Sunday, October 12 from 6 to 10
p.m. at Hyatt Regency DFW.
Thanks to the generosity of the CISD community and neighboring
sponsors, CEF was able to award 36 grants and 10 individual
$1,500 scholarships to recipients during 2007. CEF hopes
to see an even more successful event in 2008. Tickets
are available now and can be purchased online
or at the event! www.southlakecef.org.

Long-Range Planning Committee
Continues Facility Study
Citizens and employees serving on the district's Long-Range
Facility Planning Committee (LRFPC) met Monday to continue
their study and discussion of capital improvement and
facility needs districtwide. The group has been meeting
regularly since March to formulate a recommendation to
the Board of Trustees. Monday's meeting concentrated on
an explanation of the district's building capacity model,
as well as the demographic analysis and enrollment trends.
The LRFPC divided itself into five major subcommittees:
Technology, Capital Improvements/Building Use, Maintenance/Security,
Extra-Curricular and Communications. So far, the committee
has reviewed the preliminary work of the Technology and
Capital Improvements subcommittees. The group will next
hear discussion by the Maintenance/Security Subcommittee
led by Kosse Maykus. The LRFPC is expected to make a formal
recommendation to the Board of Trustees sometime in early
2009; until that time, all options and alternatives are
being considered and discussed. Ultimately, the elected
Trustees must decide on a formal plan of action.

Use Subcommittee's work on building capacities, visit

Carroll ISD Joins State
Health Plan
Carroll ISD Trustees approved joining the state’s
TRS ActiveCare program for Group Health Insurance for
the 2008-2009 plan year. About 85 percent of the public
school districts in Texas participate in the state plan.
The change will be effective January 1, 2009, and the
employee enrollment process will begin immediately. The
district has been under contract with United Healthcare.
Their renewal agreement, however, proposed an average
premium increase of 21 percent across the three options
currently offered to employees. Based on the prior year
bid process, current claims history and inquiries with
other carriers, the Carroll ISD Insurance Committee identified
TRS ActiveCare as the only other health insurance option
for consideration. Information relating to both providers
was presented and analyzed by the Insurance Committee
on August 20. The Committee representatives reviewed the
proposals, gathered input and questions from the employees
at their campuses/departments and ultimately made a unanimous
recommendation to move to TRS ActiveCare.

Engineering Software Piloted At Durham Elementary
WeDo, an interactive engineering software designed
to work with LEGO models, was pilot-tested during the
2007-08 school year in several elementary schools in the
United States including Durham Elementary. The program
was introduced as a robotics program designed to teach
children as young as age seven how to make simple machines
and write software programs to solve problems.
At Durham Elementary 15 classes covering grades two,
three, and four took part in a six-week pilot test of
the program beginning in February, according to DES science-lab
teacher Debra L. Heath.
Heath said she met with each class weekly in one-hour
sessions and recruited two parent volunteers for each
class to help students build and modify their LEGO models.
“The kids were so focused, so geared up,”
she said. This school year, Heath plans to expand the
robotics program, beginning in March, after the school
receives its set of WeDo kits. She will introduce
the simplest robot, the Kicker, which kicks a ball, with
first graders.

Toyota Hosting Driving Skills Program
Toyota is providing national advanced driving skills
program, Toyota Driving Expectations, which is being offered
free of charge to the public at Lone Star Park in Grand
Prairie, November 7 to 9 and November 14 to16. Registration
for the free program is now open at www.toyotadrivingexpecations.com.
The program takes driver's education to the next level,
showing teens defensive driving techniques and proper
ways to identify and react to dangerous driving situations.
Participants must have a driver's license or learner's
permit.
One unique aspect of the program is the emphasis placed
on parents' participation In contrast to other driving
programs. A parent or guardian must attend the four-hour
session with their child, allowing parents to fully understand
their teen's driving behavior and open a dialogue among
families that promotes responsible driving habits.
