Girls' Golf Team Scores State Championship

For the first time in Carroll history, the Lady Dragon golf team has earned the title of UIL Class 5A State Champions!

The girls' won by six shots over Lubbock Coronado for a combined total of 631 at the two-day tournament May 8-9.

Congratulations to the Lady Dragon golf team members:

  • Kalie Presti (81-75) Second Team All State
  • Sarah Hurt (80-76) Second Team All State
  • Alexa Park (80-78) Honorable Mention All State
  • Brynn Donovan (80-84)
  • Taylor Slagle (85-81)

The boys' team also competed at State, and earned eighth place. Congratulations to the following Dragon golf athletes:

  • Brandon Stuart (74-74) Honorable Mention All State
  • Tyler Dunlap (78-77)
  • Justin Wileman (77-78)
  • Luke Thacker (75-81)
  • Brendon Alexander (76-85)

Colby Lowe Grabs Gold Medals In State Track Meet

Dragon senior Colby Lowe brought home two gold medals at last weekend's State track and field championships in Austin. Colby won first place in both the boys' 1600 and 3200-meter races. This is his second consecutive gold medal in the 1600 and his third in the 3200.

Also competing at State were C.J. Brown and Tara Upshaw. C.J. finished fifth in the boys' 1600 and Tara finished sixth in the girls' 1600. Carroll finished sixth in the team standings with 23 points.

Dragon Baseball Team Advances In Playoffs

The Dragon varsity baseball team advanced another step in the playoffs after shutting out Arlington Martin in a two-game series last week.

The Dragons will next face Coppell in the Class 5A Region I quarterfinals. Game 1 is Friday, May 16 at 4 p.m. at Carroll Senior High School. Game 2 is Saturday, May 17 at noon at Coppell High School and if a third game is necessary, it will take place immediately following the second game. Note this new schedule; today's game was cancelled due to wet field conditions.

Underwood, McCurley Named District Teachers Of The Year

Campus Teachers of the Year, retirees and special awards winners were honored during Monday's end-of-year reception at Carroll Senior High School. Hundreds of Dragon employees gathered to enjoy food and door prizes and also celebrate with special recognition winners.

Employees with 20, 25 and 30 years of service were recognized on stage and the 2007-2008 District Teachers of the Year were announced. Congratulations to Durham Intermediate's Chris Underwood. He was named the K-6 Teacher of the Year. Carroll High School's Julie McCurley was named the Secondary Teacher of the Year. Chris and Julie were chosen from among the campus Teachers of the Year. As District Teacher of the Year award winners, Chris and Julie received monetary gifts from the Southlake Chamber of Commerce and the Carroll Education Foundation. Park Place Lexus General Manger Gary Venner presented both with the use of a Lexus vehicle to drive this summer. The Campus Teachers of the Year also received awards from the Chamber and CEF as well as one-year gym memberships to Larry North Fitness.

Chris and Julie will represent Carroll ISD in the Region XI Teacher of the Year contest for Texas as well as participate in the employee convocation in August.

Other Special award winners included: Auxiliary Service: Jose Lazo, Carroll Middle; Paraprofessional Service: Mariko Muller, Johnson Elementary; Paraprofessional Service: Cheryl Wieting, Dawson Middle; Distinguished Service: Jane Cousins, Johnson Elementary; Distinguished Service: Gene Stanford, community member; Community Service: Debra Heath, Durham Elementary.

Board To Meet Monday

The Carroll School Board will meet Monday, May 19 at Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Boulevard in Southlake. Open session will begin at 5:30 p.m. with student recognitions of the Lady Dragon golf team, track champion Colby Lowe and the Literary Criticism academic team. An executive session will follow.

A complete agenda will be posted to the CISD website Friday afternoon.

Inclement Weather Plan For Graduation

The Class of 2008 graduation ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5 at Dragon Stadium

Although District officials are hoping for beautiful weather when the class of 2008 walks across the stage June 5, an alternate weather plan has been prepared in case of rain on graduation day at Dragon Stadium.

The scheduled time for graduation is Thursday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m. However, in the event that weather conditions are less than favorable, the graduation ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 6.

Should the original ceremony be postponed, the revised graduation schedule will be posted to the District and CSHS websites as well as announced via the District's emergency telephone notification system, Connect-Ed.

Elementary Summer School Registration Continues Through May 28

Carroll ISD's Elementary Summer School Program has been designed to reflect concentrated instruction in the areas of reading and math and is intended to provide a meaningful learning experience for students who need assistance developing and/or maintaining reading and math skills at their current grade level.

Classes will be held at Rockenbaugh Elementary School this summer - Monday through Thursday on the following dates: June 9-12, June 16-19 and June 23-26. Class times are 8 to 9:45 a.m. and 10 to 11:45 a.m.; tuition is $150 per class or $300 for both.

The deadline to enroll for K-6 summer school has been extended to Wednesday, May 28. See links below for additional information.

Digging For Dragons' Event: Burn Up The Road For Education

Don't forget, Digging For Dragons is hosting the Dragon's Fire 5K run Saturday, May 17. The start and finish will be at Central Market in Southlake. In addition to the 5K, Central Market is hosting an all-day health fair that begins at 9:30 a.m.

  • Registration begins at 7 a.m.
  • 1 Mile Fun Run at 9 a.m.
  • 5K at 9:30 a.m.
  • Awards Ceremony: 11:30 a.m.

Other activities will include food, live entertainment, kidz art plaza and fun for all ages! Volunteers are still needed for the day of the event; community service hours are available for students, and parents are welcome to join in and help, too!

Applications Accepted For Gifted Program Committee

Carroll ISD's Instructional Services Department is seeking members for the district’s Gifted Program Advisory Committee. The purpose of this committee is to guide the direction of the CISD Gifted Program.

RES Librarian Wins $100 Shell Gift Card

Congratulations to Judi Reinert, the librarian at Rockenbaugh Elementary School. She's the week 18 winner in the True To The Core drawing. New CHS Yearbook Seeking Student Staff Members

Carroll High School students. . .do you have a passion for diving into action with a camera in hand? What about having an all-access pass to the inter-workings of CHS, including the Sports Center, Marching Band, Homecoming, Spring Fling and so much more? How would you feel if you were given an entire class period to be an action reporter? Well, look no further. Karen Otto is proud to announce the opening of Carroll High School’s first-ever yearbook (well, in four years that is). The CHS yearbook staff will be responsible for not only creating the theme of the 2008-2009 CHS yearbook, but also highlighting the news, activities, events and people that define what the ’08-’09 year is all about.

The yearbook staff has job openings for incoming freshmen and sophomores. As a member of the yearbook staff, you will work with cutting-edge design, computer and photography technology and equipment. The staff also provides refinement in writing and leadership skills, assets important to colleges. Prerequisites for these staff positions include an enthusiastic attitude, coupled with strong organization, work ethic, communication and writing skills. Flower Art Auction Taking Place At CSHS

Carroll Senior High School students are auctioning off art this week in the campus library. Dozens of beautiful pieces of work created by Art I students are available. Bidding for the flower art auction takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. this week and concludes at 2 p.m. Friday, May 16.

CMS Putting On Cinderella Production

Carroll Middle School is presenting Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella May 21-22. This production takes place at 7 p.m. both evenings in the CMS cafeteria. The show features the CMS choirs as well as the CMS Secret Society of Singing Dragons.

Dragon Student Recognized As All-American Gymnast

Carroll High School freshman Colton Howard was recently recognized as a USA Gymnastics 1st Team Academic All-American at the USAG Junior Olympic Nationals Gymnastics Championship held at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Michigan.

This award was presented to Colton to acknowledge meritorious academics (greater than a 3.85 GPA out of 4.0) and his dedication to the sport of gymnastics.

The honor was presented by four-time, All-Around National Champion and three-time Olympian John Rothlisberger.

 

 

 

Southlake Chamber Announces New Staff Member

Jill Johnson

Giovanna Phillips, IOM, President, of the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, announced the appointment of Jill Johnson to serve as Marketing Coordinator for the Chamber. Her role will involve aspects of promotion, research and development.

Johnson has an extensive background in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. Most recently she served as executive director at the Jefferson City, Missouri Convention and Visitors Bureau and before that was with the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce in Lenexa, Kansas. Johnson was also employed for several years with Residence in by Marriott.

Phillips said, “Johnson’s marketing strength in city-wide promotion will allow the Chamber to capitalize on its mission of providing an enhanced Southlake experience for visitors, residents and businesses alike.”

A native of Kansas, Johnson is a graduate of Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas.
