Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week Is May 5-9

Caring. Trained. Certified. Thoughtful. Professional. Dedicated.

These are just a few words that describe today's child nutrition professional.

For the School Nutrition Association, every day is Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation Day, but it doesn't hurt to set aside some time to celebrate just how special child nutrition employees are - especially those who serve the children of Carroll ISD.

That's why the School Nutrition Association has designated one week a year to remind everyone - students, directors, managers, parents, teachers, school administrators - that child nutrition employees work very hard to prepare and serve well-balanced, nutritious meals to Dragon students. And, of course, to let these professionals know you're thinking of them and appreciate the care that goes into each meal served and the efforts made to make sure the meals are prepared and served in a safe and clean environment.

Don't forget to take time next week to thank the Dragon Child Nutrition team for the work they do!

New Message Sign Board Installed At CES

CES Principal Stacy Wagnon and Assistant Principal Donnie Bartlett pose in front of the new message board.

Carroll Elementary School recently received a new digital message board. Half of the funds were donated by the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

The board that was replaced was 10 years old and required school volunteers to manually change out the lettering. A school volunteer would have to back a truck up next to the old sign to change out the messages.

CES administrators are thrilled to have a new message board that's easy to use and can be instantly changed. Shown above in front of the new message board are CES Principal Stacy Wagnon and CES Assistant Principal Donnie Bartlett.

CMS Yearbook Earns More Awards

Carroll Middle School's 2007 yearbook, Anything But Ordinary,
was recently awarded the Bronze Star from the Interscholastic League Press Conference. This award places the yearbook in the top five percent of yearbooks statewide.

The CMS yearbook is one of 30 in Texas to be recognized with a Star award from ILPC, which is an affiliate of the University Interscholastic League and the nation’s largest state high school association of student and yearbooks.

Yearbooks from throughout Texas were sent to ILPC for critique and judging, ILPC Director Jeanne Acton said. The judges rated the book and nominated the top books for Stars.
The nominated books went before a panel of judges, and the panel decided the Stars.

“Almost 40 books were nominated for Stars, and from that, 30 were selected to receive either a Gold, Silver or Bronze Star,” Acton said. “The quality of the yearbooks gets better every year, making the competition even tougher.”

The award was presented during the 81st annual ILPC state convention held last month at the University of Texas at Austin.

Congratulations to the eighth grade yearbook staff members: Casey Kopp, Alex Taylor and Haley Upshaw - and current CHS freshmen who also contributed to last year's book: Robert Hasler, Laura Spitler, Kaitie Reed, Sean Meehan and Jacob Williamson. The CMS yearbook adviser is Amy Kaspar.

Teacher Introduces DES School Song

Durham Elementary School now has a school song - thanks to music teacher David Platt. The song was Introduced for the first time at the DES Volunteer Appreciation banquet April 25. Mr. Platt adapted the song from composer Joe Raposo who is famous for writing music for the hit children's show Sesame Street.

'"I wanted a fun song because Durham is such a joyful place for kids," said Mr. Platt. "I knew this was the kind of 'happy-sounding' song I was looking for as I developed the introduction and words to fit our school setting and added the cheering sections where the children shout 'D-E-S.' The minute it starts playing, everyone is in a happy mood."

Durham Elementary School was opened in 1995 and now boasts a lively school song, thanks to DES' own Mr. Platt.

Participate In America's Favorite Mom Contest

Want to give your mom the best gift ever this Mother's Day? Nominate her for the title of America's Favorite Mom by logging onto www.americasfavoritemom.com and submit why America should love your mom as much as you do. She could be one of the finalists chosen by viewers to win cash and prizes as well as be the star of a prime time TV special.

This year is the 100th Anniversary of Mother's Day, the perfect time to tell your mom how much you care. To make this day even more special, call Macaux Floral and send her flowers to tell her how special she really is. Ten percent of purchases over $50 will be donated back to Carroll ISD. Orders must be made in person or by phone for offer to apply.

Visit Macaux Floral Events at 1609 Hart, Suite 100 in Southlake. For more information, call 817-488-6003 or visit www.macauxfloral.com.
