DMS Principal To Retire After Three Decades In Education
Dawson Middle School Principal Trudie Jackson is retiring after more than three decades in education. She has served the DMS campus for the past four years. She came to the Dragon family from Irving ISD where she was an Assistant Principal at Lamar Middle School. Trudie's career has been dedicated to serving middle school students, their parents and the faculty members who teach them. During her tenure, she served as a consultant for author June Hunt during the writing of the book Bonding With Teens Through Boundaries and she has participated in a variety of professional development and leadership activities and training. "This 30-year journey has been extremely rewarding, and I’ve been blessed to have crossed the path of so many incredible people throughout my career,” said Jackson. “Carroll is no exception to that. In four short years, I have been afforded so many opportunities. I can't say enough about CISD, the community and specifically Dawson Middle School. I call them ‘family’ because they truly exemplify all the attributes of what a family does for each other. The staff at Dawson is all about relationships and their passion to take care of students is to be commended. It has been a phenomenal place to serve.” Trudie is a member of the Texas Association of Secondary Principals as well as the Texas Middle School Association. Although she says she will miss the Dawson family tremendously, Trudie is looking forward to spending time with family and opening a Bed & Breakfast outside of Canton after she retires. “Trudie has the heart of a Carroll Dragon and has served as a wonderful leader for Dawson Middle,” said Dr. David J. Faltys, Superintendent of Schools. “We wish her much success as she begins new endeavors in retirement life.” A reception will be held in honor of Trudie Tuesday, May 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at DMS. Larry Hughes coaches the Dragon baseball team. Trustees Approve Staffing Needs For 2008-2009 School Board members spent several hours during Monday evening's meeting working through the proposed 2008-2009 school budget and needs list. The proposed $80 million budget calls for a three-percent raise for all employees. Trustees have focused on building a healthy fund balance, capitalizing on opportunities such as the District's recent oil and gas lease, as well as the sale of the Peytonville property. While these remain the primary areas of focus, Trustees are carefully consider anything involving reoccurring expenditures from one-time revenue sources. It's expected that the full 2008-2009 budget will be voted on by mid-summer, but the Board has made some initial staffing decisions so that administrators can begin looking for the most qualified candidates. A number of needs remain that have been identified and prioritized for Board consideration, but Trustees are doing their due diligence by looking at long-term budget projections, enrollment trends and anticipated needs still to be brought forward by the Long Range Facility Planning Committee. Below is an outline of the positions/needs approved by Trustees at the May 19 meeting:
Stay tuned to School eNews Online throughout the summer months for more information on the budgeting process. Board Hears Technology Subcommittee Report Members of the Long-Range Facility's Technology sub-committee made a presentation to Trustees at Monday evening's School Board meeting. Chair Tina Wasserman and committee member Ed Burns made the presentation which included a detailed overview of the research the group has conducted since March. Subcommittee members have been working in cooperation with CISD Chief Technology Officer Patrick Tanner to do a broad assessment of the District's current state of technology. The review consisted of tours of the technology data center, review of operations and procedures and the evaluation of existing and new technologies - related to both hardware and software. The subcommittee reported that the District is currently operating on "past-end-of-life" network equipment that, in many cases, is no longer supported by the vendor that originally sold it to CISD. Over the past year, the District has invested in some new and innovative technologies that have the potential to greatly enhance the educational process and increase productivity for teachers and administrators, however, the subcommittees' concern is that the District's current network infrastructure and design will not accommodate the increased data demands that these technologies require. The subcommittee members' recommendation to Trustees included a list of short-term needs they believe will enhance network security and sustain high performance and reliability. The list included infrastructure upgrades, implementation of a new data backup solution, an upgrade to mission critical applications systems and a network monitoring and management solution that includes proactive measures for managing network problems and ensuring plans are in place for replacing failed network equipment. The subcommittee believes these immediate needs can be implemented prior to the start of the 2008-2009 school year. The subcommittee plans to return to a Board meeting in June to make a second presentation, which will include a request for funds neccessary to implement the list of short-tem technology needs. The Technology subcommittee will continue to meet throughout the summer and will hold their next meeting in June. Time and location will be posted to the Long-Range Facility Planning Committee webpage. In Other Business, The School Board. . .
Long-Range Committee To Meet Tuesday The next large group meeting of the Long-Range Facility Planning Committee is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the library of the former Carroll Intermediate School building. Committee Chairman Robert Williams and subcommittee leaders will meet briefly at 6 p.m. prior to the start of the meeting at 6:30 p.m. A complete meeting agenda will be posted to the Long-Range Facility website later this week. The committee's charge is to serve in advisory capacity to the School Board and Administration on a temporary basis regarding the topic of long-range facility planning. For more information, visit www.southlakecarroll.edu/facility.htm. Principal Committee Working To Fill Vacancies Information about the candidates chosen for these positions will be communicated in the coming weeks in School eNews Online. Inclement Weather Plan For Graduation Ceremony

Her research requires her to spend a great deal of time at the Large Hadron Collider (LDH), being built at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside of Switzerland. Dr. Mills' presentation was heard with great interest by the more than 80 student members of the Dragon Physics Society, as well by teachers and guests. Dr. Mills received her Bachelor's degree in Physics from Harvard University and her PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Mills' parents are Southlake residents. Eubanks Students Learn About Child Labor
After reading Iqbal by Francesco D’Adamo, a story of child labor in Pakistan’s carpet industry, Maureen Gavin’s Eubanks Intermediate School sixth graders participated in a child labor simulation. Students traveled through a variety of five stations which were set up in the school library and consisted of weaving, sewing, sorting, tying knots and fastening bolts. The students had strict rules to follow such as no slouching, talking or smiling. If any rules were broken, a 10-cent penalty was deducted from their $2.50 per week pay. At the end of the activity, students came to understand the hardships faced by children their age who are forced into bonded labor. They also gained a greater appreciation for the many blessings they experience each day, including the privilege of going to school.
