Dragon Jazz Band Headed For New York

The Dragon jazz band is jet-setting to New York early Friday morning to compete in the 12th Annual Essentially Ellington competition & festival in New York City.

Two Carroll Seniors Earn National Merit Scholarships

The second round of 2007 National Merit Scholarship winners were announced May 2. Two Carroll seniors earned awards. Congratulations to Nicole Arockiam and Nathan Presmyk.

Both Nicole and Nathan will receive $2,500 scholarships funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. College-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the coming weeks.

Digging For Dragons To Host Jamboree May 5

Don't miss Digging For Dragons' Celebrity Sports Jamboree Saturday, May 5 at Dragon Stadium. Proceeds from this event benefit Carroll ISD.

Dragon Staff To Celebrate With End-Of-Year Reception

All Dragon staff members are invited to the 2007 End-of-Year Awards Reception Wednesday, May 9. This event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Student Activity Center of Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Boulevard.

The theme is American Bandstand, so don't forget your poodle skirts and leather jackets as we celebrate and honor Carroll ISD's award-winning staff members. Carroll Trustees meet Monday, May 7 for the next regular School Board meeting. A complete agenda will be posted to the district's website Friday.

Football Season Tickets Go On Sale May 8

Season tickets for Dragon football games go on sale to the general public Tuesday, May 8 at 8 a.m. at the Carroll ISD Administration Center, 3051 Dove Road in Grapevine. At this time, one-year seat licenses or three-year personal seat licenses are available for purchase.

The cost of a one-year license is $50 per seat. The cost of a three-year license is $90 per seat. The actual season ticket is an additional $75 per seat.

Durham Campus Evacuated Tuesday Morning

Durham Elementary/Intermediate School was briefly evacuated Tuesday morning.

An air conditioning unit failed and resulted in smoke in one classroom on DIS' side of the building. Southlake Emergency Personnel responded to the call at approximately 8:10 a.m. Classes were back in session for students by 8:35 a.m. Tuesday.

The District's emergency operations plan was followed during the evacuation, and Durham students and staff should be commended for their quick responses.

Carroll Principal Honored By University

Texas Woman's University's College of Professional Education recently honored Durham Elementary School principal Dr. Betty McIlvain.

Dr. McIlvain received an award for outstanding teaching. Criteria for the award includes facilitating the learning process and outcomes, using "best practices" in teaching and demonstrating effective leadership. Dr. McIlvain teaches aspiring school administrators enrolled in TWU Graduate School.

Note Annual Spring Choir Concert

The Carroll High/Senior High School Choir Department is proud to announce its upcoming show choir concert Tuesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in the CSHS auditorium, 1501 W. Southlake Boulevard. Admission is free and open to the general public.

The last concert of the year is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 in the CSHS Auditorium at 7 p.m. Many seniors will be singing preludes and all of the seniors will be spotlighted. All five choirs will perform on stage for an uplifting spring concert. Many talented Carroll students will be performing for their last time on the CSHS stage - so don't miss this event!

Professional Stunt Coordinator To Visit CMS

Professional stunt coordinator Steve Wolf is making a presentation to seventh graders at Carroll Middle School Thursday, May 4 at 9 a.m. Mr. Wolf will be demonstrating stunts and special effects for the students that are geared toward TEKS curriculum.

Old Union Elementary School's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is selling engraved bricks to enhance the appearance of the OUES picnic area.

Tennis Players Set 5A Record For Dragons

Four tennis doubles teams recently traveled to Lubbock for Regional competition. All four teams, consisting of Mike Hayes & Joe Nottoli, Andrew Reznick & Jonash Loh, Ashley Halvorson & Stewart Pittman and Lara Landers & Ryan McClanahan, each won first round matches.

Mike and Joe, along with Stewart and Ashley, won second round matches, as well. Mike and Joe won their semifinal match to reach the Finals. They lost a very tough match in the Finals round but eventually won their next match to qualify for the State competition! This accomplishment is a first in Class 5A history for the Dragon tennis team. Ashley and Stewart ended up taking fourth place in the mixed double division.

The State qualifiers will travel this weekend to Austin to compete in the championship next week. Congratulations and best of luck Dragon athletes!

DES Fourth Graders Crowned National Champions

Durham Elementary School students in second, third, and fourth grade Quest classes recently participated in the 2006-2007 Academic League's Online Math League Competition. This competition is open to schools throughout the United States. The students complete three, 15-question tests during the school year with problems that vary greatly in difficulty.

Durham’s fourth graders are the first place team in the nation and are ranked as the only national champions out of 92 teams! The second grade team finished in fifth place out of 31 teams in the United States. The third grade team finished in third place out of over 59 teams. Student trophies were awarded to students scoring in the top 10% of the nation. Several students finished in the top 100 in their grade level out of thousands of participants. Students Log More than 50,000 Community Service Hours

Carroll students from CHS and CSHS have collectively volunteered more than 54,000 hours this year in community service. Of these students, 550 logged more than 40 individual hours this year.

Durham Fifth Grader Wins 5k Race

Durham Intermediate School fifth grader Molly Tucker recently won the overall women's category at the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Club 5K race, The Hound Dog Hustle, with a time of 18:05.

The national women's record, for a 10-year old, is 17:36, set in 1987.

Molly is scheduled to run next at the Dragon's Fire 5K, and hopes to repeat or better her time on the USATF sanctioned race. Congratulations Molly!

Dragon Swimmers Preparing For Open Water Competition

The Carroll Dragon swim team will be represented this weekend at the Texas High School Open Water Swimming State Championships in Austin.

Six boys and six girls will swim 2,000 meters down the Colorado River. This is the first-ever Texas State High School Open Water Championship. This event is hosted by the American Swimming Association, in conjunction with the Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. Open Water Swimming is now an event at the Olympics, in USA Swimming and will be added next year to NCAA Swimming.

Students Selected For Water Polo Teams

Carroll High School freshmen Andrew Goss and Chelsea Dunlap have been selected to play on 14-member Southwest Zones Male and Female Water Polo teams. These teams are comprised of the best male and female water polo players from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Their teams will compete over Memorial Day weekend against the other 11 zone teams from around the country at the 2007 Men's & Women’s Cadet Zone Championships & National Team Selection Camps.

Andrew and Chelsea are both members of the Carroll Varsity Swim and Water Polo teams. They are pictured above with CISD Water Polo coach Stuart Smith.

Middle School Swimmers Take First At Meet

Over 50 Dragon swimmers and two divers competed over the weekend in the North Zone State Middle School Swim/Dive Championships at the Keller Natatorium. These young athletes are well on their way to a bright future at the high school level with the Carroll Dragon swim team.

Swimmers and divers from Carroll Middle School and Dawson Middle School represented the Dragons and came home with many awards. Nineteen teams from across Texas competed for individual and team honors. The following is a list of results:

Carroll Students Celebrate Choir In 80s Attire

Carroll High/Senior High School's annual choir banquet was held April 20. The students celebrated the end of the year with a theme of "Love the 80s."

The Student Choir Board recognized 36 graduating seniors (pictured at right) with record albums that included a special senior group photo.

The Choir Booster Club awarded Krista McCoy, Heather Neeley and Alexa Bryant with $1,000 college scholarships to pursue degrees in music.

 

In addition, Taylor Vassios, Cristina Regalado, Cassie Pelton and Emily Avila were awarded scholarship for All State choir camp.

DIS Band Earns First Division Trophy

Durham Intermediate School's band received a first-division trophy from the judges at the Sandy Lake competition held April 27.

All three of the judges gave the DIS band a first-division score, with two of the three giving the group a "1+." Congratulations band members!

Congratulations to Wes Hamilton (Dawson Middle), and wife Carrie, following the birth of their new baby daughter Allison (Allie) Hamilton. She was born May 2 weighing 6 pounds, 13 ounces and was 18 inches long.

Southlake Kiwanis To Host 3rd Annual Stalcup Awards Banquet

The Southlake Kiwanis Club is hosting the 3rd Annual Stalcup "Heart Of A Dragon" Awards Banquet." This event takes place Wednesday, May 16 at Timarron Country Club. Meet and Greet with award nominees is from 6 to 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The awards presentation will be held from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. The leadership award is presented to a graduating Carroll football payer. The Kiwanis organization sponsors this scholarship in honor of the late Charlie Stalcup who was the Defensive Coach for the Dragons.

The pre-registration cost for tickets is $30 for adults and $20 for children under 12. VIP seating is available, as well. Students, parents and Dragon fans of all ages are invited to attend.

Town Hall Meeting To Focus On JPS Health Network’s Future

Precinct Three County Commissioner Gary Fickes encourages Northeast Tarrant County residents to attend a town hall meeting Thursday, May 3 on the future of the JPS Health Network.

JPS is updating its strategic plan and is interested in taking public comment on how tax dollars should be spent on the county hospital system. The town hall meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the North Richland Hills City Council Chambers at 7301 N.E. Loop 820.
