Southlake Girl Scout Earns Gold Award

Lauren Franklin

Carroll Senior High School senior Lauren Franklin has earned her Gold Award, the highest level of achievement a Girl Scout can reach.

Lauren said she has gone on a personal journey of growth and learning to complete her project. For her project, Lauren transformed an area of overgrown weeds and partially constructed beds into a beautiful butterfly garden at the Bob Jones Nature Center. “This garden can be used by the entire community for hands-on learning experiences,” said Lauren.

She began her project by researching local butterflies, interviewing experts, consulting local garden guidebooks and websites to develop a planting list that will attract, host and provide nectar to local butterflies. After developing her planting scheme, she began working on acquiring the necessary plants, benches and bedding materials. Peter and Kerry Rozes of Insight Merchandising and Michael Ott of Michael’s Custom Landscaping contributed towards Lauren’s project, as did the Franklin family. Lauren recruited cleanup and planting help from the Venturing Crew #928, of which she is also a member. After many months of pulling weeds, roto-tilling, planting, mulching and watering, the garden has sprung to life. Through this project, Lauren was able to show how a garden can easily bring educational concepts to life, and provide hours of learning opportunities. Visitors to the Nature Center will be able to enjoy Lauren’s project for years.

The Gold Award is the highest recognition a Girl Scout can earn. Senior Girl Scouts aged 15-18 are eligible to earn the award. Requirements include earning the Girl Scout Gold Leadership Award, which requires girls to complete 30 hours of leadership work, as well as earn three Interest Projects and one Focus Book relevant to their project. They must also earn the Girl Scout Gold Career Award, which requires girls to complete 40 hours of career exploration and the Girl Scout Gold 4Bs Challenge, which requires girls to assess their community and its needs, and develop a vision for change. Once these steps have been met, girls use their vision for change to complete a service project that reaches beyond the Girl Scout organization and provides lasting benefit to the girls' larger community. It requires a minimum of 65 hours of work in planning and actually doing a project, most young woman spend 200 hours or more on their projects.
