Carroll Releases Spring 2008 TAKS Scores Carroll Independent School District officials released scores Monday for the spring 2008 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test. Students at every grade level and subject posted TAKS passing rates of 90 percent and above. The results were shared by Superintendent Dr. David Faltys at the evening School Board meeting. Students in grades 3-8 scored passing rates of at least 95 percent and above in the subject areas of reading, math, writing and science. High school students were also tested in language arts and social studies at various grade levels. To be Exemplary, the passing rate must be at least 90 percent in not only every grade level and subject, but also for every student group, according to the Texas Education Agency. In addition, each campus is rated based on their overall scores and the scores of each state-identified student group. Last year Carroll ISD was the only 5A school district to earn the Exemplary rating. In fact, every Carroll ISD campus was also rated Exemplary. School officials say it is too soon to predict what rating the various campuses and district will earn. These results will be combined with the third testing administration scheduled for July. “We are pleased once again with the performance of our students
and the obvious hard work by our staff,” said Superintendent David
J. Faltys. “As a district we will continue to study these results
as we look for opportunities to meet student needs and identify target
areas for remediation and enrichment.” Faltys said CISD instructional
leaders will continue to provide support to students with the goal of
increasing student group passing rates and Commended scores.

2007-2008 Volunteers Of The Year Recognized
The 2007-2008 Volunteers of the Year were honored at Monday's School Board meeting. Congratulations to the following individuals who worked tirelessly throughout the year to make Carroll schools excellent. Carroll Elementary: Greta Parr School Board Approves Technology Infrastructure Project Carroll School Board Trustees approved the purchase of technology equipment to reinforce and expand the district’s infrastructure after members of a citizen’s committee made recommendations last month. On June 2, the Board approved an amount not to exceed $407,000 from the general operating fund balance and up to $40,000 from 2006 bond funds to pay for the project. The decision came after members of the Long Range Facility Planning Committee’s Technology Subcommittee met to assess needs with Chief Technology Officer Patrick Tanner. The group is concerned because they learned major infrastructure components of the data communications network are operating at or near maximum capacity for data transfer. With the launch of new technologies over the summer, such as video streaming and remote workstation imaging capabilities, officials were concerned that the existing technology infrastructure would not live up to demands. The Board’s vote ensures a short-term solution involving the replacement of network switches at the core and key campus locations that are experiencing performance degradation due to network congestion. Servers for mission-critical information systems will be upgraded to provide enhanced performance and security. School officials say a new data backup solution with plans for offsite storage will be implemented along with network monitoring, management and maintenance for network components. Finally, seven additional switches will be purchased and installed to complete the additions at the high school. During the past school year, Trustees earmarked two-cents of the four-cent enrichment tax to be spent on technology needs. The district has not had a technology bond election pass for nearly 10 years. Members of the Technology Subcommittee said they are working on other classroom and technology hardware needs that will be presented to the School Board as part of the Long Range Facility Planning Committee’s final report. For more information on the work of this citizen’s committee, visit the district’s website and click on the Breaking News link. In Other Business, The School Board. . .

District Seeks Exclusive Beverage Contract Carroll ISD has requested proposals from beverage companies for a five-year exclusive contract for vending services, pouring rights and advertising at all district facilities. The district’s 12-year contract with Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, now Cadbury Schweppes, expires on August 31, 2008. School officials say they hope to have proposals from the three largest soft drink companies by June 12. A report is expected to the CISD School Board at their June 16 meeting, with contract negotiations and a final vote in July. Officials say the agreement will meet all requirements of state and federal nutrition guidelines and should provide revenue and vending commissions over the next five years. The last 12-year agreement resulted in more than $1.2 million in revenue, excluding commissions. Electronic copies of the 2008-2009 School Calendar are available on the district’s website under the calendar link.
