Dragons Get Real

Welcome to the Dragons Get Real – Live. Learn. Lead. web page, a collection of benevolence initiatives hosted by Carroll organizations and supporters. Dragons Get Real - Live. Learn. Lead. is Carroll ISD's year-long theme. CISD hopes to emphasize personal health and wellness, Rachel's Challenge and instructional technology as a means to engage students and enhance learning. The year of professional development and special events will also spotlight good deeds done by Dragons.

Real living means taking care of yourself, eating healthy, exercising and tending to the needs of family so that you can be and do your best. It involves strengthening and nurturing new and existing relationships through kindness and compassion toward others, creating an environment of excellence for all students and making a real difference in your corner of the world.

Real learning means honoring and protecting the tradition, but it also means embracing continuous improvement by accepting new challenges, increasing your overall capacity for knowledge, valuing innovation and raising the bar personally and professionally. It involves finding new ways to challenge and engage students by utilizing the technological tools of this digital age.

Real leading is done by modeling character and integrity in everyday actions. It values open and honest communication with the public and understands the importance of accountability and transparency while making courageous decisions that benefit the community's most precious assets, the students.

Relay For Life

In the spirit of Rachel's Challenge, Carroll ISD is planning the community's first American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Southlake, May 21-22, 2010. Relay for Life is an inspirational event honoring and remembering those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Teams sign up to walk in honor of a cancer survivor; a special luminaria program honors the memory of those lost to cancer. Teams camp out at the Relay for Life grounds, taking turns walking the track throughout the night. Kick-off events will include games, bounce houses, entertainment and more. Student groups are encouraged to participate by forming teams, raising funds, attending the event and performing on stage. Cancer survivors are the special guests of the event and will participate in opening ceremonies as well as a hospitality event.

Dana Scott To Kick Off Rally
The Relay for Life event will kick off with a Rachel's Challenge Rally at 5:30 p.m. Dana Scott, sister of Rachel Scott, will be the guest speaker for this activity, which will involve K-12 Carroll ISD students. This rally will celebrate the year's activities as part of the Rachel's Challenge Kindness and Compassion program. Students who have earned kindness and compassion chain links will participate in the rally and show evidence of the acts of caring they have done all year long. Following the close of that rally, Relay of Life will officially kick off (about 7 p.m.).

Rachel's Challenge is a K-12 program that promotes kindness and compassion. Administrators began researching anti-bullying programs last year after School Board Trustees asked for a program to address the issue with students. The program celebrates the life and writings of Rachel Scott, the first teenager killed in the 1999 Columbine tragedy. Rachel was known for acts of kindness toward other students, especially those who were new, lonely or suffered a disability. Educators in Rockwall ISD credit Rachel's Challenge with having a positive, life-changing impact on their community. The program was implemented in Carroll in February 2008. Carroll school officials say they were looking for a common language that involves all employees, parents and community members, as well as students at every grade level.

Rachel's Challenge has been implemented in the lower grades using age-appropriate materials to promote positive relationships through kindness and compassion. KC Clubs (Kindness & Compassion Clubs) were formed at the K-6 level to promote and encourage these attributes. Secondary schools introduced Rachel's Challenge in planned assemblies, and the program has been enthusiastically accepted and endorsed by SPARK (Students and Parents Against Risks to our Kids). At the secondary level, Friends of Rachel Clubs (FOR Clubs) involved training student leaders as they model kindness and compassion in their peer relationships. All district staff were trained as well. The program is being funded through the School Board's TRUE TO THE CORE fund, which provides financial support for programs and initiatives that support the district's core values. CMS Raises Money For Haiti Relief

Carroll Middle School added to the support that has been poured out to those in need in Haiti. The school had a Cash War to raise money for the American Red Cross for Haiti relief. During the week, students brought in money to their “favorite” teacher. At a pep rally, the winner was announced. Mrs. Cashon (second place) shaved the head of the winner – Coach Jon King – in front of the school. CMS students raised over $1,500.

Pink Zone Event Big Success

Carroll held “Pink Zone” night during the regular season of the varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball games. The WBCA Pink Zone initiative is a glove, unified effort for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Assocation’s nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities
 and beyond.

Carroll Seniors Christie Groh and Cameron Brennan were each given a $500 scholarship courtesy of district sponsor Mark Jameson. In between Tuesday's basketball games, Jameson presented the scholarships by congratulating the students on their academic and athletic achievements. Christie is the Lady Dragon's leading rebounder and Cameron is a defender on the Dragons Varsity Soccer Team.

The Lady Dragons debuted their pink warmup tops and pink shoelaces in their District 6-5A victory against Flower Mound. Fans were encouraged to wear pink and pink T-shirts were sold in support of the cause.

Hands for Haiti

Students across the Dragon Nation are combining efforts to help victims of last month's earthquake in Haiti. Monday, Feb. 8 Johnson elementary coordinated a "Hands for Haiti" event. Working together, the students assembled 21,600 meals by filling bags with a rice mixture. The bags were boxed up and will be shipped to Haiti through an organization called "Kids Against Hunger. Students, parents and staff also raised over $3,600 for the relief effort.

JES Helps Provide Relief To Haiti

Students at Johnson Elementary School are learning the value of helping those in need. The school collected $3,319.50 for the Kids Against Hunger organization (www.kidsagainsthunger.org) this week. Every $5 that was raised provides 50 meals for the children of Haiti. Kids Against Hunger is also a Rachel's Challenge initiative. On Monday, Feb. 8 from drop-off until pick-up, JES students will be assembling meals that will be sent to Haiti. The third and fourth graders will be assembling meals (measuring, scooping, pouring) while the kindergarten, first and second graders will be making cards and decorating food packages and boxes being sent.

CES Kind & Compassionate Club Making A Difference

Carroll Elementary School’s Kind and Compassionate Club made an impact all the way to Baghdad. During the first six weeks, the KC Club students wrote letters of appreciation to our servicemen and women currently serving overseas. The school’s kindness toward the troops was welcomed as they were sent two letters in return. One letter written on rain-proof paper is currently hanging by the Rachel’s Challenge banner outside the library.

The club was formed in the spirit of Rachel’s Challenge and the students became members when they signed the Rachel’s Challenge banner.

The fundraising group included: Stanley Chang; Yuhsin Lee and family; Jill Clay; Elizabeth, Stan and Diane Cross; Annie and Patrick Tam; Taylor and Noah Watts; Bruce and Debbie Patton; Caroline Sherburne; Donna Rafferty. The team was also supported by Student Ambassadors, French Club, cheerleaders and administrators.

"Stuff The Bus" Campaign

The spirit of giving sparked a friendly competition between Carroll ISD campuses. Students at Carroll and Dawson Middle schools have been loading up on canned foods, gently-used coats and blankets for this year's "Stuff the Bus" campaign. It's the second year Carroll schools have participated in the campaign benefitting non-profit organizations in North Texas. Carroll Middle School's collections will be donated to the Roanoke Food Pantry. Dawson's donations will go to Grace in Grapevine.

The campus with the most donations wins. The principal of the losing campus will be invited to serve students at the winning campus lunch while wearing a hot dog costume. Seventh and eighth grade students will also be compete against each other. Donations will be delivered Monday, Dec. 14.
