 K-8 Art Program

The Art classroom is the place to beWe believe the art classroom is a vital part of a visual, tactile and kinesthetic learner's need to create, design, and explore new ways of doing things in a positive and encouraging environment.

Curriculum Overview

Students at all levels begin learning contour line drawing. They progress to adding value and shading to shapes in order to create form. Next, depth and perception are introduced by teaching overlapping of forms and using large and small to create perspective. One point and two point perspectives are added as students' progress with their skills. Symmetrical and asymmetrical balance also creates a formula for filling the space in a unified way. We discuss art prints by famous artists so students can become familiar with different ideas, artistic styles and historical time periods. A variety of media is used in the art classroom including pencils, pens, crayons, gel and watercolor markers, chalk and oil pastels, watercolor, tempera and acrylic point. Many other tools are used in makring two and three dimensional collages and ceramics.. Art lessons incorporate cross curriculum subject matter.

The purpose of the sequential based art curriculum is to give elementary, intermediate and middle school art students a basic knowledge of two and three-dimensional design. By learning and using the elements and principles of design, students are able to create visually pleasing works of art.

Elements

  • line, shape, value, form, space, texture and color

Principles

  • unity, emphasis, balance, variety, movement, rhythm, proportion and pattern

Creativity, originality and freedom of expression are also key components in the process of making art.

The principles are: unity, emphasis, balance, variety, movement, rhythm, proportion, and pattern. Creativity, originality, and freedom of expression are also key components in the process of making art.

Students at all levels begin learning contour line drawing. They progress to adding value and shading to shapes in order to create form. Polygons become three-dimensional, geometric forms.

Next, depth perception is introduced by teaching overlapping of forms and using large and small to create perspective. One point and two point perspective are added as students progress with their skills. Symmetrical and asymmetrical balance   also creates a formula for filling the space in a unified way.

As we "read" a picture with a "variety" of detail, (lines, shapes, textures, patterns, or colors), our eye is moving throughout the design to find the "emphasis" or "main idea". We discuss art prints by famous artists so students can become familiar with different ideas, artistic styles, and historical time periods. A variety of media is used in the art classroom including pencils, pens, crayons, gel and watercolor markers, chalk and oil pastels, watercolor, tempera, and acrylic paint. Many other tools are used in making two and three dimensional collage and ceramics.  Art lessons incorporate cross curriculum subject matter.
