Intermediate and Middle School Mathematics:
A Historical Perspective

Carroll ISD students strive for excellence in all subject areas and typically score above state and national norms on standardized assessments. During the 2001-2002 academic year, in order to meet the unique needs of our students and provide a more rigorous mathematics experience, the district implemented a compacted mathematics program in grades 5 and 6.

The fifth grade intermediate math (compacted) curriculum incorporates all of the fifth grade Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives and approximately one-third of the sixth grade TEKS objectives. The sixth grade intermediate (compacted) curriculum incorporates the remaining two-thirds of the sixth grade TEKS objectives and approximately one-half of the seventh grade TEKS objectives.

In 2002-2003, the program was expanded to include an accelerated component designed to address the needs of a population identified as exceptionally skilled in mathematics. The accelerated program curriculum compacts four years of mathematics content in two. It was designed to prepare the advanced mathematics students for Algebra I in grade seven, while at the same time, ensure that the students who pursue this track understand all concepts covered in grades 5-8.
