For the past decade, Johnson students have been participating in our Koalaty Kid program.  Koalaty Kid is a program that has students strive to “be the best they can be.” A portion of the program was devoted to helping out the community around them.

This year we will devote all of our energy towards community service. Students that choose to volunteer for this challenge will donate their time and energy in helping others out. A log sheet will be turned in by April 30th. Those students who have achieved their designated goal, will be celebrated at the end of the year.

Community service projects provide active learning in a real-life setting for our kids. These hands-on activities teach good citizenship and promote problem-solving in response to the needs of the community.

We urge you to talk about, and take part in the program. You are wonderful examples of this by the many hours you devote to Johnson Elementary. Kids who are aware and helpful to the community around them, become adults who are aware and helpful to the community around them.

Below are some common questions/answers:

Q: What can my child do to get community service? In the past, we have seen some amazing examples of students donating their time and effort to the community. A few examples include: visiting or makings cards for a nursing home, liter patrol, helping out at school/church functions, helping someone without pay. These are just a few of MANY things that can be done. Be creative.

Q: May all hours be done in the same “type” of community service? YES! For instance, your child may help out all day at the church festival for four hours, then work in the nursery for the remaining two.

Q: If my child turns in LESS than the required hours for their grade level or it is turned in after the due date, will they receive the award? NO.

Q: What don’t you consider community service?
I made lunch for my dad.                        I raked leaves at home.
I sold Girl Scout cookies.                        I made my bed.
Anything “chore” related is not community service.

Q: How much time may be earned through donations? Students may earn 2 hours of time by making donations to GRACE and/or donating to  various service needs that arise throughout the year (i.e. hurricane drives) Ten cans of food equal thirty minutes of service time. Our GRACE collection bin is down by the gym.
