Science Lab

Welcome to the Rockenbaugh Elementary Science Lab

Carroll ISD students are very fortunate not only to have science taught in their classrooms, but also to experience science in the science lab. Instruction in the lab usually follows classroom instruction enriching the students’ learning through “hands-on” and inquiry based activities. Teachers coordinate lessons to maximize student enjoyment while meeting the requirements of the curriculum.

Additional areas of the science curriculum that are covered include laboratory, garden, and animal safety. Other activities augmenting the classroom curriculum include recycling and composting, which are usually taught in November to coincide with Texas Recycles Day or in April when we recognize Earth Day. StarLab, our district’s portable planetarium, is tentatively scheduled for January.

Science Explorations Day is scheduled for October 23rd and is a fun-filled day of science for the entire school. The Super Science Sale is November 9th – 13th and is a sale of science toys, equipment, and even animals.

Our outdoor learning center, the RockenbaughNativeGarden and Wildlife Sanctuary, is a valuable supplement for our curriculum. Teachers use the garden areas in teaching plants, animals, life cycles, habitats, etc. The garden area actually includes several gardens: a hummingbird garden, a butterfly garden with larval and nectar plants, a bird sanctuary, two wildflower areas, and five raised planting beds.

Recycling News:

CISD is going green! The district has contracted with Duncan Disposal/Republic Services to recycle on every campus. This means that we can now recycle paper (including cardboard), plastic, aluminum cans, and steel cans at school. Teachers will no longer have to take the plastic bottles and aluminum cans home to recycle – yea!  We will no longer be using the Abitibi paper recycling bin and will not be able to take paper from homes and businesses as we expect to fill our bin every week!

Recycling Team:
The
Greener Dragons

Recycling Team is a service opportunity available to all 3rd grade students. The science lab needs a few dedicated students to help collect paper to recycle from each classroom on Tuesday and Friday mornings. They will also collect plastic bottles and aluminum cans from each hallway. Adult supervision will be provided when the students carry the items outside. Sign-up is in September.

Lab Assistants

Lab Assistant is a service opportunity available to all 4th grade students. Lab assistants will perform a few simple chores including taking down the lab stools, sharpening pencils, feeding some of the animals, and checking all animals for water. When finished with their duties, they will be allowed to hold several animals such as the tortoise, the hamster, or the leopard gecko. Sign-up is in September.

Volunteer Opportunities for Parents and Students:

Garden Adopt–A–Spot – Parents volunteer to help maintain areas of the Rockenbaugh Native Garden and Wildlife Sanctuary. They work as much or a little as their time permits. Contact Ginger Jones, if interested.

Science Explorations Day – On October 23rd teachers will lead students in a variety of activities. Parents are needed for a few hours or more to assist. Parents are also needed to copy, cut, and prepare the activities before the actual day. All supplies are provided.

Super Science Sale– During the week of November 9-13th, parents are needed to volunteer to assist in sales for 2 hour (or more) shifts. The store will be in the science lab and will be open from 7:30AM until 4 PM. It will stay open later on one evening.

Pet Purchaser – Parents volunteer to go to Petco once a week for one month to purchase crickets and other supplies for the animals. The supplies are charged to our science lab so that volunteers do not incur any expense other than their time, effort, and gas.
