Required Summer Reading Program For 2011

Reading remains one of life's greatest pleasures and enhances all aspects of the educational process. Summer reading will boost your reading comprehension and increase success in the coming school year. Studies show that students involved in a summer reading program gain significant vocabulary and increase their reading rate. An active, fluent reader processes information more quickly, and students who are able to read above grade level improve their scores on college entrance exams.
Because reading is both enriching and pleasurable, the Carroll Independent School District is requiring students to take time over the summer to read. In sixth grade, the students may choose the book that they would like to read according to a few guidelines. In grades 7-12, students will read books based on the Language Arts/English course they have enrolled in for next year. Therefore, students should first identify the course they have selected for next year and find the book or books associated with that course on the attached flyers.
The activities associated with each book will either be distributed by the teacher at the first of school next year or will be available on the campus web site. The best way to prepare for these assignments is to actively read by taking notes or annotating in the book. In addition, discussing the book or books with friends or parents increases retention.
