A new application and supporting income documentation are required at the beginning of each school year.

Even if your student(s) received free or reduced-price meal benefits last school year, you must submit a new application within the first 30 operating days of the new school year.

Failure to submit a new application within the first 30 operating days will result in your student(s) losing meal benefit eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to complete an application for each child?

A: No. Complete one application per household for all children living in your home.

To avoid delays, please:

• Complete all required sections.

• List every household member.

• Include all required supporting income documentation.

• Sign the application.

Incomplete applications cannot be approved.

Q: Who qualifies for free or reduced-price meals?

Students may qualify in one of the following ways:

Income Eligibility

Children may qualify if the household's gross income (before deductions) falls within the limits established by the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines.

Categorical Eligibility

Children are eligible for free meals if anyone in the household receives benefits from:

• Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

• Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

• Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)

Foster Children

Children who are under the legal responsibility of a foster care agency or court are eligible for free meals.

Head Start or Early Head Start

Children participating in Head Start or Early Head Start are eligible for free meals.

Homeless, Runaway, or Migrant Students

Children who meet the federal definition of homeless, runaway, or migrant are eligible for free meals.

Q: What is included with a free meal?

Meal options vary by grade level:

• PreK–8: One plate lunch which includes choice of small milk, water or juice.

• High School and Senior High: One à la carte lunch entrée, 1 piece of whole fruit, and choice of small milk or large water bottle 

Additional food items and beverages may be purchased separately.

Application Approval

The Carroll ISD Child Nutrition Department processes all applications.

An official Letter of Household Approval of Benefits will be emailed to the email address provided on your application indicating whether your application has been approved or denied.

Most applications are processed within 10 working days. If you have not received a response within that time, please contact the Child Nutrition Department at (817) 949-8240.

Please keep your Letter of Household Approval of Benefits. It may be required as proof of eligibility for:

• Free and reduced-price meal benefits

• Carroll ISD pre-K eligibility

• Transportation (pay-to-ride) fee waivers, when applicable

• Other Carroll ISD programs that may have campus-specific eligibility requirements
