  • JES Gingerbread Village

We're continuing a tradition at Johnson Elementary.  We invite all JES families to spend some quality time together over the Thanksgiving break creating a festive gingerbread house for our annual JES Gingerbread Village! So that the houses can be attractively displayed, all houses must be brought in by Wednesday, November 29th.  We're sorry, but houses brought after this date cannot be displayed and will be returned.

When it comes to gingerbread houses, the fun is in the details!  Be creative while enjoying time with your extended family members and friends.  For inspiration and ideas, check out resources online or, better yet, consult with your young artist for ideas.  Participation is voluntary.

    Here are the guidelines:

    • For space consideration, the base of your house should not exceed 9" x 11".  If you are purchasing a kit, please check the dimensions.  If your house exceeds these dimensions, we will not be able to place it in the holiday village.
    • The height of your structure should be reasonable.  Keep in mind that you will be transporting your house to/from school.
    • Due to space, we will only display one house per family.
    • Glue works better than icing for building the structure and helping it stay together.  Use icing for decorative details.
    • Deliver your house to the library beginning Monday, November 27th through Wednesday, November 29th.  So that we can get all displayed and arranged, no house can be accepted after Wednesday, November 29th.  Sorry, no exceptions can be made.
    • Each house should have your family's name displayed on a name card or on the structure itself.
    • Look to your child/children for inspiration... be creative, laugh, enjoy some sweets as you go and and make family memories!
    • Houses will be on display for all to enjoy through December 18th.  Make plans to pick up your gingerbread house December 18th and 19th.  All homes left after noon on December 20th will be discarded.
    • Lastly, stop by JES during December to visit our JES Gingerbread Village.

  • Kindergarten Quest Referrals

    Referrals

Referrals for kindergarten Gifted and Talented screening are open from Monday, November 27th  through Friday, December 15th.  In accordance with state standards, kindergarten students are identified and placed in the CISD Quest program by March 1st.  Identified kindergarten students receive Gifted and Talented services through a weekly pull out program. GT Specialists guide students through a conceptual understanding that people use self-knowledge, interest, and strengths to relate to the world around them. If you believe your child's learning style would be a fit and are interested in referring your child for the program, please complete the two steps of the referral process:

    1. Fill out the information on this Google Form.

    2. Fill out the form you can print from here Please send in this form to the JES front office with a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  (These envelopes will be used to mail the results to you.)  Results will be mailed once testing is completed at all CISD elementary campuses.

Deadline: December 15th at 3:00 pm.

Testing Information:  Testing will start in January and continue throughout the month until the testing is completed.  Elementary students in kindergarten must meet the Phase 1 Cognative Abilities Test (CogAT) criteria in order to move forward to the Phase II portion of the screening process.  Phase II involves the Iowa Assessments Achievement Test.  For more information about the Quest program, you can visit CISD's Gifted and Talented webpage.  To read about common traits of giftedness, visit the National Association of Gifted Children.   Questions regarding the testing process and GT program may be directed to leslie.elkins@southlakecarroll.edu.
