Carroll ISD Jazz Orchestra Named Finalist for Prestigious Essentially Ellington Competition

Carroll Independent School District is celebrating a remarkable achievement as the Carroll ISD Jazz Orchestra has been named a Finalist Band for the esteemed Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival. This honor places the orchestra among the most elite high school jazz bands in North America, marking the seventh time the group has earned this distinction.

The Essentially Ellington program, organized by Jazz at Lincoln Center, is one of the most respected jazz education initiatives in the world. It provides high school jazz bands with access to free big band charts, rehearsal guides, and invaluable professional feedback. Each year, the program culminates in an unparalleled competition and festival that showcases the finest young jazz talent from across the United States and Canada.

The Carroll ISD Jazz Orchestra will travel to New York City from May 7-11, 2025, to participate in the festival at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. The event will include workshops, jam sessions, rehearsals, and performances, with the Carroll ISD Jazz Orchestra joining only one other Texas high school in this year’s competition. The group will also perform alongside members of the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

“This is a tremendous honor for our students and our program,” said David Lown, Director of the Carroll ISD Jazz Orchestra. “Our musicians have worked tirelessly, dedicating countless hours to perfecting their craft. Being recognized on this national stage is a testament to their talent, commitment, and passion for jazz.”

In preparation for the festival, the Carroll ISD Jazz Orchestra will continue an intense practice schedule focused on mastering the challenging big band repertoire provided by Essentially Ellington. Students will also benefit from additional workshops and guidance from both local and national jazz professionals.

Carroll ISD Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Glenn commended the students and their director, saying, “We are incredibly proud of our Jazz Orchestra for this outstanding achievement. Their dedication and talent exemplify the excellence we strive for in Carroll ISD. We look forward to cheering them on as they represent our district on a national stage.”

Community members are invited to support the Carroll ISD Jazz Orchestra by attending upcoming local performances and participating in fundraising efforts to help cover travel expenses for their trip to New York City.
