Dragon Pianist Headed to Carnegie Hall

Dragon Pianist Headed to Carnegie Hall

Judges say he has remarkable rhythm, top-tier tone and a powerful command of the keyboard - and he'll showcase those skills on January 10th at Carnegie Hall.

Carroll High School sophomore Aarav Ranjan will play the piano at the world-renowned performance hall in Manhattan after winning first place at the state level of the Elite Music Competition last month in Plano.

"I can't believe it," he said recently, "I'm honored!"

The Elite Competition is a non-profit organization based in New Jersey that holds annual contests for young pianists, instrumentalists, vocalists, and small chamber ensembles ages 6 to 22.

It's considered one of the most prestigious platforms for emerging classical musicians. As part of this recognition, judges invite first- and second-place winners from each state to play at the Weill Recital Hall, which is an elegant performance space within the Carnegie Hall complex.

"We feel incredibly proud and grateful," said Aarav's father, Amit Ranjan. "This is a reflection of his discipline, perseverance and love for music. We are thankful for his teachers, mentors and the supportive community that has guided and supported him throughout this journey."

Aarav played clarinet in the Dawson Middle School band, advancing to District and Region levels. He also played tennis for CHS last year and has consistently earned a straight-A average. He has been studying piano for the last ten years and has earned accolades at other events, such as the Tarrant County Sonatina Music Competition, but he says this honor tops them all.

"Carnegie Hall is probably the best-known stage for musicians," he said.

For the Texas competition, Aarav played Prelude No. 12, “Minstrels” from Book I by Claude Debussy, earning a perfect score of 10 out of 10 across all evaluation categories. Student musicians compete in divisions based on age and the difficulty of the music they play. Judges score performers on many details, including musical phrasing, intonation, rhythmic accuracy and tempo, as well as overall musical achievement. The judges said Aarav’s flawless evaluation reflects not only technical mastery, but a rare depth of artistry for a musician his age. He is 16.

Performing at Carnegie Hall is a remarkable milestone for any artist, and especially for a high school student. Aarav’s invitation places him among an elite group of young performers selected from across the country to represent their states on one of music’s most iconic stages.

Congratulations to Aarav on this exceptional accomplishment as he represents Carroll High School, Southlake, and Texas at Carnegie Hall.

His success is a powerful reminder of the talent, dedication, and excellence that define our Dragons—on campus and on the world stage.
